Did you know that at the corner of 5th and Girard Avenue in Philadelphia stands a large stone building, St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church? From the outside, St. Peter appears to be just another church among many such buildings in a city rich in Catholic culture. Beneath the church is a Shrine whose altar rests atop a glass case containing a man's remains, which are garbed in a wax mask and dressed in bishop's garb. The modesty of the Shrine's surroundings is a stark contrast to the fact that this Shrine is the resting place of one of the giants of the Catholic Church in the United States, Redemptorist Saint John Nepomucene Neumann. And that is surely the way St. John Neumann would want it.
Come and visit the National Shrine of St. John Neumann
and meet this holy, humble saint who dedicated his life to God and God's people.
Walk on holy ground and meet the "peoples priest."
Monday, February 19, 2024 marked a day of vandalism at the National Shrine of St. John Neumann. Early in the morning someone hurled rocks through 3 stained glass windows in the shrine. The stained glass windows are protected on the outside with quarter inch tempered glass. The rocks broke through the tempered glass and broke various areas of the stained glass. Fortunately, no one was in the Shrine, except our saint, St. John Neumann. St. John Neumann, I believe, advocated with God for protection of the shrine along with Our Mother of Perpetual Help. People have called and asked to make a donation for the restoration of the windows. Under "GIVE" please go to Stained Glass Windows Donations. Thank you for your support and help! SPECIAL UPDATE! We have now learned that this project is being supported by a Grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation!!! This means that we have $25,000 towards the repair which will cost $41,000. We are grateful for their assistance and we are still collecting funds to cover the costs. Make a donation
